I need a hero

Star Wars Spoiler alert: Almost a year after real actor Carrie Fisher died, I treated myself to a solo cinema run to see The Last Jedi.  This production was a real salute to the original and it’s poignant to think that all the main heroes are now all gone, Leia, Luke and Solo.

I love the little touches that feature Leia original distress hologram and Han Solo’s dice.

I left the movie with a wonderful glowing feeling that went back to my childhood but knowing that I must move on. Nostalgia is great but it can tie you down, a theme that was repeated again and again in the movie.

So, 2018 will be my year of not looking back and like Yoda says “The greatest teacher failure is.”

How to play Mind games

Working or gaming. What difference does it make? Well, in most people’s heads, work is honourable and Gaming is not. This attitude maintains the digital divide between gaming professionals and everybody else.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a beautiful mind game. The screen warning only appears for 2 seconds and it’s clear from the outset that this game could mess with your mind.

The game’s opening credits feature a mental health advisor and it’s interesting that not many people are streaming it right now.  Anyhow, this looks like a tasty treat for me to tackle this month.

I got a refund

I took a chance, called PlayStation Support in LA about my failed DLC install and actually got through to a human being who quickly proceeded an unexpected refund.

Total result.

Now I’m a happy gamer again…it was only $14.99 but the principle was everything.  Anyhow, looks like I won’t be wondering the Horizon Dawn landscape for now unless I complete the game in my UK profile then purchase the DLC for the UK market.

Bring Your Own Diversion (BYOD)

InfoSec Acronyms and hype come and go but for me, the most notable of 2017 is the absence of Bring Your Own Device.  Are people still using their own gear with company data? Yes.  Is the risk any less this year? No.

So why the sudden lack of focus on BYOD? Well, it’s been brutally replaced with acronym monsters GDPR and BREXIT where you feel like an idiot if you don’t what they mean.  Don’t worry sooner or later some know-all will share his or her expert unsolicited opinion on the subject.

What the hell is GDPR?

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is poised to change the strategies for all Information security folk (Hobbyist, Pros, Good guys and Bad).  But is this another hype like the Y2K Bug? And if so, what’s the big one for 2018-2019?

Without PR and marketing, we wouldn’t know what to be scared of and what to spend money on.  In the meantime, I’ll sit up on the moral high ground in my sniper nest for a few months and watch the panic.
